Community College Teaching, Certificate

The certificate curriculum provides a well-rounded learning experience that blends theory with hands-on teaching practicum. Teaching in the community college no longer requires a credential. Since the 1990-91 academic year, most community colleges require faculty to have a master's degree in a discipline currently taught at the community college level.

The program consists of three (3) courses: two lecture-based courses and one independent study course (with an optional teaching internship at a community college), providing hands-on experience and valuable industry connections. Throughout the program, participants develop the confidence, skills, and expertise needed to teach a diverse range of students. The Community College Teaching Certificate program equips students with both academic training and real-world teaching experience, positioning them for a rewarding career in higher education.

Prerequisites

To be eligible for the program, the student must either:

• Hold a master's degree or doctorate degree in a discipline taught at a community college
• Be in the last term of completing a master's degree program
• Have any degree and 6 years of experience in the designated Career Technical Education (CTE) area 

Eligibility for future teaching opportunities at a community college depends on an individual's educational achievements. Prior to starting the program, it is important to match your education to the state minimum qualifications (MQs) using the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges Handbook.

The Community College Teaching Certificate Program is designed for candidates who are interested in teaching in a community college, or who are new faculty at a community college. The program consists of three courses (8 units), a two unit survey course, a three unit methodology course and a three unit teaching internship at a community college.

Prerequisites

To be eligible for the program, the student must be near completion in a graduate program, possess a master's degree, or be currently employed as a faculty member in a community college.
